Who will play the roles in your film? Casting offers an opportunity to address many portrayal issues, as well as to find new and under-used talent. It is good employment practice to select from the widest pool of talent and to ensure equality of access for all groups of actors.
Below are some examples of where you might discover acting talent, especially if you are looking to cast someone from an under-represented group. If you would like to recommend any additional links, please contact us.
- Casting Directors' Guild of Great Britain - The Guild is a signatory of the Equalities Charter for Film and has pledged to take steps to promote and increase on-screen diversity.
- The Arts Councils support theatre companies across the UK:
- Specialist theatre groups that are predominantly populated by actors from minority groups include:
-
Talawa Theatre Company (black theatre)
- Tamasha (Asian theatre)
- Graeae Theatre Company - a disabled-led theatre company that profiles the skills of actors, writers and directors with physical and sensory impairments.
-
- Spotlight - The Spotlight directories, published on behalf of Equity, include an African, Caribbean, Oriental & Asian Artists Register and a Disabled Register. However, some actors may choose not to be listed in these separate registers.
- Productionbase - A database of freelancers in film and television, including some actors. People listed on the database can identify themselves by their specialist areas, and there is a section where they can indicate if they have a disability.
For more detailed information on disabled actors, go to Casting and working with disabled actors.
