Sexual orientation

  • Sexual orientation, or sexuality, includes a person's emotional, physical and/or sexual attraction and the expression of that attraction.
  • There is no agreed figure of the numbers of lesbians, gay men, and bisexuals in the UK because of the lack of national surveys. Stormbreak estimates that 5-7% of the population falls into these three groups. (Source: Stormbreak)
  • Average salaries for these groups are around £30k, compared with a national average of £18k across the general population. (Source: Stormbreak)
  • Three quarters of gay people say they avoid buying from companies with a reputation for being homophobic and 80% make a positive point of buying from companies that have a pro-gay stance. (Source: Stormbreak)
  • The gay press is read widely among lesbians and gay men, with only 8% saying they never read a gay newspaper. (Source: Stormbreak)
  • Fewer than 40% of gay men and 33% of lesbians are out to everyone who knows them.(Source: Stormbreak)
