The UK Film Council aims to:
- help the sector to achieve a more diverse workforce behind, and in front of, the camera across the film sector value chain (development, production, post-productions, distribution and exhibition).
- enable all groups within our society to participate in and enjoy film culture as audiences and learners.
- ensure that equality and diversity commitments are fully integrated into every aspect of all core UK Film Council activities.
The UK Film Council is a signatory to the Equalities Charter for Film.
Responsibility for diversity
Responsibility for equality and diversity is shared across the board, management and staff of the UK Film Council, as well as with organisations that it supports - such as the British Film Institute (bfi), Regional Screen Agencies and Skillset - which all share a commitment to diversity.
Within the UK Film Council, the Diversity Unit, which is part of the Chief Executive's office, provides advice and guidance on diversity matters, through:
- working with special interest groups and industry partners to create a business culture and ways of working that support equality of opportunity and diversity in the sector.
- providing practical tools and information to help the sector to raise its game on diversity issues.
- equality-proofing UK Film Council funding criteria and application processes.
- identifying and supporting initiatives aimed at creating clear and accessible paths for entry into and progression in the UK film sector, acknowledging the previous affects of disadvantage and discrimination experienced, in particular by people from minority ethnic groups, disabled people and women in certain grades.
- identifying and supporting activity that actively champions and celebrates the diversity of film, filmmakers and audiences for film in the UK.
Members of the team also sit on a number of boards and committees, including:
- UK film sector's Leadership on Diversity forum
- Employers' Forum on Disability
- Broadcasting and Creative Industries Disability Network
- Skillset Film Skills Strategy Committee
- FT2 (Film & Television Freelance Training)
The Diversity Unit provides Grant-in-aid funding for programmes that support the UK Film Council's objectives. It does not fund film productions.
