Research suggests that many inequalities still exist in the film industry workforce. These figures from the production sector illustrate this:
- Women make up only 39% of the film production workforce, compared with 46% of the general UK workforce. They represent the vast majority in roles such as make-up (85%) and costume (80%), but very few of the camera department (15%) and fewer still in sound and electrical roles (4%).
- Only 5% of the film production workforce is from a minority ethnic group. In London, where the industry is heavily concentrated, these groups make up 24% of the general workforce.
- 84% of the production workforce is aged 49 or under, with just 10% of women in this area aged 50 or over.
- Only 3% of the production workforce is disabled, compared with 5% of the general workforce.
- 14% of women in the workforce are living with dependent children, compared with 36% of men.
