betty is an independent TV production company, employing 60 staff. Credits include 'This Teen Life', (Royal Television Society education award, 2004) and 'The Real Charlotte Church.'
The opportunity
betty saw the challenges facing parents - particularly mothers - working in the industry. Long hours and unsociable shifts meant that many women had to put their careers on hold while they brought up their children.
The initiative
The company recognised a need to introduce a change in working patterns in order to attract and retain working mothers. They made working arrangements adaptable for employees with family commitments, particularly women returning to work.
How it works
The company offers 'Working Mum' positions, which are office-based with flexible working hours and give the option of working part-time.
Results
Since the scheme began in 2002, betty has recruited four mothers through the scheme, working as assistant producers, series producers or development producers. The scheme also enabled the company to retain a member of staff, offering her promotion to a senior position when she was four months pregnant.
Championing equality issues has also significantly contributed to betty's reputation as a professional and ethical company.
