APT Films is an independent production company, which has produced films including 'Wondrous Oblivion' (2003) and the Oscar-nominated 'Solomon and Gaenor' (1999).

The opportunity
The company recognised an opportunity to create a development community that would bring together established and emerging talent in the film industry.

The initiative
In 2000, APT began running monthly script development workshops, which are open to everyone. The aim was that these workshops would function as both networking and creative support sessions.

How it works
The APT workshops are advertised through the company's website, which also allows people to sign up and join the mailing list. The workshops offer a programme of informal seminars, discussions and talks from high profile industry figures, including:

  • Sally Hibbins, producer of 'Yasmin'
  • Delroy Lindon, who starred in 'Wondrous Oblivion' as well as 'Malcom X', 'Get Shorty' and 'The Cider House Rules'
  • Joe Oppenheimer, Development Producer, BBC Films
  • Peter Carlton, Head of FilmFour Lab.

Results
The workshops have become a distinct brand. Their reputation has spread and each one attracts 30-50 attendees, from novices to experienced professionals. A number of active working relationships and projects have evolved from the workshops, some involving APT Films; many between workshop attendees.

The APT workshops are now sponsored by Skillset and by Grant Harrod Chartered Accountants.

Further information
For more information on the workshops and to join the mailing list, see the APT website.
