 Job share scheme - UIP

Job share scheme - UIP

United International Pictures (UIP) is a film distribution company, owned by Paramount and Universal.

The opportunity
Laura Bell joined UIP in 1990. Since 1996 she has been Personal Assistant (PA) to Deborah Sheppard, Marketing Director of UIP (UK). After returning from maternity leave Laura was keen to continue working at UIP, but wanted to balance her work with family life. Kimberley Devese occasionally worked as a temporary PA at UIP while caring for her own young children.

The initiative
Laura and Kimberley proposed a job share arrangement to the management team whereby they would share the role of Personal Assistant to Deborah Sheppard.

How it works
The position started in January 2003 on a three-month trial basis. Laura and Kimberley agreed how they would divide the working week, with Kimberley working two days, and Laura working the other three. They have set up good communications systems, through notes and emails, to ensure that they are always up-to-date with what has happened while the other was in the office.

Results
The job share arrangement is still in place and has been a huge success. According to Deborah Sheppard 'informing one PA of something is just as good as informing the other'.
