  • If possible, train everyone in diversity issues, but particularly those who recruit, manage and appraise other staff.
  • Train managers in how to manage and appraise staff effectively and fairly.
  • Let people know when they are doing a good job and when they need to improve.
  • Carry out formal reviews for each member of staff at least once a year and informal reviews throughout the year.
  • Arrange training at a time and place that everyone it is intended for can attend easily.
  • When someone is not performing well, point this out to them as soon as possible and agree a plan of action for improvement.
  • Mentoring and coaching are very effective ways of developing skills and can be tailored to individual needs.
